Investigating Ghosts: Introducing the Field Investigation Team

The Otherworld North East Field Investigation Team currently comprises 9 active field investigators, 1 'armchair' investigator and 1 admin-support member (treasurer).

All field activities of the team are covered by Paranormal Investigator Public Liability Insurance from Blackfriars Insurance.

Field investigations maintain no less than 3 investigators on site (for health and safety reasons) and no more than 8 investigators on site (essentially two survey teams of 3 and 2 maintaining the monitoring station). This latter restriction is to prevent crowding on an investigation and minimise investigator contamination of the investigation/experiment results.

Applications to join the Investigation Team can be found on our Join the Society page.

Sarah Liddell, Society SecretarySarah Liddell ~ Society Secretary and Animal Behaviour Consultant

Position: Inactive Field Investigator and Society Secretary

Statement: Sarah joined Otherworld North East in 2005 after attended a handful of investigations back in 2004 before she moved to the North East of England.  Beforehand, Sarah had been running her own team in North Wales which was founded in 1998.  Her interest in ghosts and all things paranormal started at a young age through reading a variety of books on the subject.  One experience when she was 10 years of age really kick-started her interest as she is still unable to explain what she witnessed on that evening.  A true sceptic at heart, Sarah doesn't believe most "bumps in the night" are ghosts and with her scientific background she always looks for rational explanations first (and usually finds them!).  With an interest in psychology too, Sarah finds all aspects of investigations interesting, even if looked at purely from a human perception angle.  Although Sarah is taking a break from active investigating with OWNE currently, she is still involved in the online forums and discussions and still contributes to the teams articles and publications.

Publications: Investigating "Accepted" Paranormal Investigation Methodologies (2008)

Profession: Self-employed businesswoman. Partner in an industrial cleaning company and a director of a development company.
County: Tyne and Wear

Statement: Sheila has had an interest in the paranormal with a particular leaning towards ghosts and hauntings for over 30 years, which is fuelled by her ‘unusual’ experiences since childhood. She also has a keen interest in Parapsychology. In one way or another she has been part of Otherworld North East since 2004 and has several years of field investigation behind her. Experience has taught her that above all, recording must be honest, accurate and without bias. Beliefs must be ‘left at the door’ and ‘picked up’ on the way out. She considers herself fortunate in being able to combine her passion for history and her knowledge of genealogy with her dedication to the Society’s aims.

Publications: North East England Local History (2008).

Articles: Automatic Writing and the Strange Case of Glastonbury Abbey (2007), The Body Snatchers (2009), Poltergeists (2010); The History of Wallington Hall (2009); Poppies for Remembrance (2009).

Lee Munro, Trainee InvestigatorLee Munro~Trainee Investigator

Position: Trainee Investigator
Qualifications: BSc Psychology
Age: 38
County: Tyne & Wear

Statement: Lee is motivated by a long term interest in the paranormal field and a belief that the associated phenomena, evidence and experience merits serious evaluation.  With a background in psychology, Lee is interested in psychological and evolutionary factors which may be associated with beliefs and experiences.  However, Lee is keen to learn more about environmental factors and the equipment used to measure them.  Due to the eclectic nature of the paranormal field, Lee believes only an evidence based multi-disciplinary approach will further knowledge and believes OWNE are best qualified to provide this.

Gillian Coates, Field InvestigatorGillan Coates ~ Field Investigator

Position: Field Investigator
Profession: Community Education Worker
County: Tyne and Wear

Statement: Gillian has always had a natural curiosity for things in general and personal experiences she’s had in the past with things that she couldn’t find an explanation for sparked her interest into the paranormal. By a chance encounter on a dark cold night in a derelict castle way back in 2004 is how Gillian first met the members of OWNE: little did she know at that time that she would soon become a member of the OWNE team herself. From then on she’s attended many investigations. Gillian has a keen interest in history and folklore and many of the investigation have been held in some great locations steeped in history, buildings not normally open to the general public. She is willing to discuss her beliefs but thinks that an investigation is not the place to do this as others may be influenced or persuaded, which could contaminate the recordings. A sceptical mindset is required.
